Parálisis del nervio facial
Definición:
La mononeuropatÃa del VII par craneal es un trastorno neurológico causado por el daño al séptimo nervio del cráneo (VII par craneal).

Causas, incidencia y factores de riesgo:
La mononeuropatÃa del VII par craneal es una mononeuropatÃa (daño a un solo nervio) que involucra al séptimo nervio craneal (facial), el cual controla los movimientos de los músculos de la cara.
Este nervio, localizado en el cráneo, también contribuye con la sensibilidad en el conducto auditivo externo y con el sentido del gusto. Se puede presentar un daño aislado del nervio facial por lesiones localizadas, como un tumor, que ejercen presión sobre dicho nervio. Este tipo de mononeuropatÃa también puede ser causado por infección por VIH , sarcoidosis y enfermedad de Lyme , pero es posible que no tenga una causa identificable.
La parálisis de Bell es una forma aguda de este tipo de mononeuropatÃa.
