Una evaluación de la región genital externa muestra casi siempre unos huevos ovalados, de color gris claro (liendres), adheridos a la base del vello y también puede revelar los piojos adultos. Igualmente, se pueden observar las marcas del rascado o los signos de una infección secundaria como el impétigo .

Los piojos adultos pueden ser identificados fácilmente bajo el microscopio y su apariencia similar a un cangrejo, es la razón por la cual a los piojos del pubis se les denomina "los cangrejos."
