Angioedema - Overview

Edema angioneurótico; Ronchas o habones

Definición:

Es una hinchazón, similar a la urticaria, pero que se presenta bajo la piel en lugar de darse en la superficie. La urticaria con frecuencia se denomina ronchas o habones. También es posible tener angioedema sin urticaria.

Causas, incidencia y factores de riesgo:

El angioedema puede ser causado por una reacción alérgica. Durante la reacción, se liberan histamina y otros químicos en el torrente sanguíneo. El cuerpo secreta histamina cuando el sistema inmunitario detecta una sustancia extraña llamada alergeno.

En muchos casos, nunca se encuentra la causa del angioedema.

Los siguientes elementos pueden causar angioedema:

Caspa animal (escamas de piel mudada)
Exposición al agua, la luz solar, el calor o el frío
Alimentos (tales como bayas, mariscos, pescado, nueces, huevos, leche y otros)
Picaduras de insectos
Ciertos medicamentos (alergia a fármacos), como antibióticos (penicilina y sulfamidas), antinflamatorios no esteroides (AINES) y medicamentos para la presión arterial (inhibidores ECA)
Polen

La urticaria y el angioedema también pueden presentarse después de infecciones o con otra enfermedad (incluyendo trastornos autoinmunitarios como el lupus, al igual que la leucemia y el linfoma).

Existe una forma de angioedema hereditario y tiene diversos desencadenantes, complicaciones y tratamientos. Dicha forma se denomina angioedema hereditario y no se aborda en este artículo.
