Prevención:

Cualquier persona que se haya recuperado de un melanoma debe seguir cuidadosamente las pautas preventivas y vigilar con atención cualquier tipo de marcas sospechosas. El riesgo de desarrollar un nuevo melanoma se incrementa, incluso si el primero se curó. La enfermedad puede retornar años después del diagnóstico original.

La American Cancer Society (Sociedad Estadounidense de Oncología) recomienda hacerse examinar la piel por parte de un profesional cada año para las personas mayores de 40 años y cada 3 años para las personas de 20-40 años.

También se recomienda hacerse el autoexamen. Usted debe examinarse la piel una vez al mes, utilizando un espejo para revisar los lugares difíciles de ver. Consulte con el médico si nota cualquier cambio sospechoso en la piel.

Protéjase de los dañinos rayos ultravioleta provenientes de la luz solar haciendo lo siguiente:

Aplicarse diariamente un protector solar con FPS 30 o mayor (también durante los meses de invierno)
Evitar acostarse al sol o usar dispositivos bronceadores
Minimizar la exposición al sol
- especialmente durante el verano
- particularmente entre las 10 a.m. y las 4 p.m.
Utilizar ropa protectora, como sombreros y gafas para el sol
