Definición:

Es un trastorno cutáneo debido a una reacción alérgica o a una infección.

Causas, incidencia y factores de riesgo:

El eritema multiforme es un tipo de reacción de hipersensibilidad que se presenta en respuesta a medicamentos, infecciones o enfermedad. Los medicamentos abarcan:

Barbitúricos
Penicilinas
Fenitoína
Sulfamidas

Entre las infecciones se pueden mencionar:

Herpes simple
Micoplasma

Se desconoce la causa exacta. Se cree que el trastorno involucra daño a los vasos sanguíneos de la piel, seguido de daño a los tejidos cutáneos.

Algunas formas de esta afección son más graves que otras.

El eritema multiforme menor no es muy grave. La mayoría de los eritemas multiformes son causados por herpes simple o infecciones por micoplasma.
El eritema multiforme mayor es más grave y se conoce como síndrome de Stevens-Johnson. La forma más grave es causada generalmente por reacciones a medicamentos, en lugar de infecciones.

El eritema multiforme ocurre principalmente en niños y adultos jóvenes.
