Prevención:

La mejor manera de evitar el contagio con el herpes genital es abstenerse de todo contacto sexual, incluyendo el sexo oral. La siguiente mejor forma es tener una relación prolongada y mutuamente monógama con alguien a quien lo hayan examinado y no esté y nunca haya estado infectado con herpes.

Los condones siguen siendo la mejor forma de protegerse contra el contagio con la infección por herpes genital durante la actividad sexual con alguien que esté infectado. El uso correcto y continuado del condón ayudará a evitar la propagación de la enfermedad.

Sólo los condones de látex funcionarán para prevenir la infección. Los condones de membranas animales (piel de oveja) no funcionarán debido a que el virus los puede penetrar.
Se ha probado y demostrado que el condón femenino reduce igualmente el riesgo de transmisión del herpes.
Se debe usar un condón de látex durante TODO contacto sexual, incluso si la persona infectada no tiene ninguna úlcera o ampollas en ese momento.

Además, las personas con herpes genital que no tienen síntomas en el momento deben informarle a su pareja que tienen la enfermedad.

Se han desarrollado vacunas contra el herpes, pero aún son experimentales.
