Tratamiento:

El objetivo del tratamiento es la curación de la infección. El médico puede cortar y drenar el absceso para limpiar el área afectada y controlar la infección. Igualmente, se suministran antibióticos para controlar la infección.

El calor (por ejemplo, compresas tibias) puede acelerar la curación, reducir la inflamación y hacer que el área se sienta mejor. Se recomienda elevar la parte afectada para reducir la hinchazón y la inflamación.

Expectativas (pronóstico):

La mayoría de los abscesos cutáneos son curables con el tratamiento adecuado.

Complicaciones:

  • Diseminación de la infección alrededor de la misma área
  • Interferencia en la función de los tejidos cercanos
  • Gangrena (muerte tisular)
  • Diseminación de la infección a través del flujo sanguíneo, que ocasiona:
    • Endocarditis
    • Osteomielitis
    • Aparición de abscesos nuevos múltiples ("siembra" de la infección)
    • Formación de abscesos en las articulaciones, en la pleura u otras áreas

Situaciones que requieren asistencia médica:

Se debe buscar asistencia médica si se presentan signos de infección cutánea como, fiebre, dolor, enrojecimiento, edema o drenaje de cualquier clase. También si aparecen nuevos síntomas durante o después del tratamiento del absceso de piel.
