El liquen plano generalmente no es dañino y puede mejorar con tratamiento. Generalmente desaparece al cabo de 18 meses.

Si el liquen plano es causado por un medicamento, la erupción cutánea debe desaparecer una vez que éste se suspende.
Las úlceras bucales que han permanecido durante mucho tiempo pueden convertirse en cáncer oral.
