Entre las medidas preventivas se pueden mencionar:

Conseguir tratamiento oportuno para enfermedades de transmisión sexual.
Practicar relaciones sexuales con precaución. La única manera absoluta de prevenir una enfermedad de transmisión sexual es no tener relaciones sexuales (abstinencia). El hecho de tener una relación sexual sólo con una persona (monógama) puede reducir el riesgo. Use un condón cada vez que tenga relaciones sexuales. (Ver: relaciones sexuales seguras.)

El riesgo de una enfermedad inflamatoria pélvica se puede reducir haciéndose exámenes regulares de detección para enfermedades de transmisión sexual. A las parejas se les pueden hacer exámenes antes de comenzar a tener relaciones sexuales, ya que con esto se pueden detectar enfermedades de transmisión sexual que pueden aún no estar produciendo síntomas.

Todas las mujeres sexualmente activas de edades comprendidas entre los 20 y 25 años y más jóvenes deben hacerse exámenes cada año para clamidia y gonorrea. Asimismo, estas pruebas deben practicárseles a todas las mujeres con nuevos compañeros sexuales o compañeros sexuales múltiples.
