Definición:

Es un trastorno de ansiedad en el cual hay ataques repetitivos de miedo y ansiedad intensos, al igual que miedo a estar en lugares en donde podría ser difícil escapar o donde no se podría disponer de ayuda.

La agorafobia generalmente involucra miedo a las multitudes, puentes o a estar solo afuera.

Causas, incidencia y factores de riesgo:

Se desconocen las causas exactas del trastorno de angustia y agorafobia. Debido a que las crisis de angustia a menudo ocurren en áreas o situaciones donde han sucedido en el pasado, el pánico o angustia puede ser un comportamiento aprendido. La agorafobia algunas veces ocurre cuando una persona ha tenido una crisis de angustia y comienza a tener miedo de situaciones que podrían llevar a otra crisis.

Cualquier persona puede desarrollar un trastorno de angustia o pánico, pero por lo general comienza alrededor de la edad de 25 años y es más común en las mujeres que en los hombres.
