Su propia descripción del comportamiento puede ayudar a diagnosticar el trastorno. Un examen físico puede descartar causas físicas y una evaluación psiquiátrica puede descartar otros trastornos mentales.
Los cuestionarios, como la Escala Obsesivo Compulsiva de Yale-Brown (Yale-Brown Obsessive Compulsive Scale,YBOCS), pueden ayudar a diagnosticar este trastorno y hacerle un seguimiento al progreso del tratamiento.
