Síntomas:

Las personas que sufren de alcoholismo o de abuso de alcohol con frecuencia:

Siguen bebiendo, aun ven afectada la salud, el trabajo o la familia.
Beben solas.
Se vuelven violentas cuando beben.
Se vuelven hostiles cuando se les pregunta por la bebida.
No son capaces de controlar la bebida: son incapaces de suspender o reducir el consumo de alcohol.
Inventan excusas para beber.
Faltan al trabajo o al colegio o tienen una disminución en su desempeño debido a la bebida.
Dejan de tomar parte en actividades debido al alcohol.
Necesitan consumir alcohol la mayoría de los días para lograr pasar el día.
Se descuidan para comer o no comen bien.
No les importa o ignoran cómo están vestidos o si están limpios.
Tratan de ocultar el consumo de alcohol.
Tiemblan en las mañanas o después de períodos sin beber un trago.

Los signos de la dependencia del alcohol abarcan:

Lapsus de memoria (lagunas) después de beber compulsivamente.
Una necesidad creciente de más y más alcohol para sentirse embriagado.
Síntomas de abstinencia alcohólica cuando no se ha tomado un trago por un tiempo.
Enfermedades relacionadas con el alcohol, como hepatopatía alcohólica.

Pruebas y exámenes:

El médico llevará a cabo un examen físico y hará preguntas acerca de la historia familiar y médica, incluyendo el consumo de alcohol.

Las siguientes preguntas las utiliza el Instituto Nacional de Abuso de Alcohol y Alcoholismo (National Institute on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism) para evaluar el abuso o dependencia del alcohol:

¿Alguna vez maneja cuando ha estado bebiendo?
¿Tiene que beber más que antes para embriagarse o sentir el efecto deseado?
¿Ha sentido que debe dejar de beber?
¿Ha tenido alguna vez lagunas después de beber?
¿Se ha ausentado alguna vez del trabajo o ha perdido un trabajo a causa de la bebida?
¿Existe alguien en su familia preocupado por su forma de beber?

Los exámenes que se pueden hacer abarcan:

El nivel de alcoholemia (puede indicar si alguien ha estado bebiendo alcohol recientemente, pero no necesariamente confirma el alcoholismo)
Conteo sanguíneo completo (CSC)
Pruebas de la función hepática
Examen de magnesio en sangre

Cirrosis hepática; TC

TC de grasa del hígado

TC de hígado con exceso de grasa
