Una forma más leve de abstinencia de nicotina, que involucra algunos o todos estos síntomas, puede ocurrir cuando un fumador cambia de cigarrillos regulares a cigarrillos bajos en nicotina o cuando reduce significativamente el número de cigarrillos que fuma.

De acuerdo con la Asociación Psiquiátrica Estadounidense ( American Psychiatric Association ), los síntomas de la abstinencia de nicotina pueden enmascarar, encubrir o agravar los síntomas de otros problemas psiquiátricos.
