Síntomas:

La mayoría de las veces no hay ningún síntoma. Sin embargo, algunas veces, puede haber molestia o dolor. La molestia puede ser peor al pararse, hacer esfuerzo o levantar objetos pesados.

Aunque una hernia puede causar sólo una leve molestia, puede agrandarse y resultar estrangulada. Esto significa que el tejido está atascado dentro del orificio y que su riego sanguíneo se ha suspendido. Si esto sucede, se necesitará una cirugía urgente.

Signos y exámenes:

Un médico puede confirmar la presencia de una hernia durante un examen físico. La masa puede aumentar su tamaño al toser, agacharse, levantar algo o al hacer un esfuerzo.

Es posible que la hernia (protuberancia) no sea visible en bebés y niños, excepto cuando están llorando o tosiendo. En algunos casos, se puede necesitar una ecografía para buscar una.
