Infección por el virus de Coxsackie

Definición:

Es una infección relativamente común que usualmente comienza en la garganta.

Una infección similar es la herpangina.

Causas, incidencia y factores de riesgo:

La enfermedad mano-pie-boca (exantema vírico de manos, pies y boca) comúnmente es causada por el virus de Coxsackie A16, un miembro de la familia de los enterovirus.

La enfermedad no se propaga a partir de las mascotas, pero sí lo puede hacer de una persona a otra. Se puede contraer si se entra en contacto directo con secreciones de nariz y garganta, saliva, líquido de ampollas o las heces de una persona infectada. Es más contagiosa en la primera semana.

El período de tiempo entre la infección y el desarrollo de los síntomas es de 3 a 7 días.

El factor de riesgo más importante es la edad. La infección ocurre con más frecuencia en niños menores de 10 años, pero se puede observar en adolescentes y ocasionalmente en adultos. Los brotes se presentan con más frecuencia en verano y a comienzos del otoño.
