Definición:

Es una infección de los tejidos que rodean el ojo.

Causas, incidencia y factores de riesgo:

La celulitis periorbitaria es más común en niños menores de 6 años.

Puede ser el resultado de un traumatismo menor en el área alrededor del ojo o se puede extender desde otro sitio de infección como la sinusitis.

Síntomas:

Generalmente se presenta enrojecimiento e hinchazón del párpado y el área circundante. A diferencia de la celulitis orbitaria (una infección más extensa que involucra tejidos más profundos), la celulitis periorbitaria no causa protuberancia del globo ocular (proptosis) ni limita sus movimientos.

Situaciones que requieren asistencia médica:

Aunque la celulitis periorbitaria rara vez tiene complicaciones, cualquier infección cerca del ojo y próxima al cerebro es potencialmente seria. Es importante que la persona consulte inmediatamente con el médico en caso de que ella o su hijo pueda tener este tipo de celulitis.
