El médico llevará a cabo un examen fÃsico y examinará el interior de la garganta. Éste o una enfermera frotará suavemente la parte posterior de la garganta con un hisopo o aplicador de algodón, de tal manera que se puede examinar una muestra de tejido más de cerca. Esto se denomina cultivo de exudado farÃngeo (cultivo de garganta).
Se puede realizar un CSC para verificar la presencia de signos de infección. Una radiografÃa o una TC del cuello pueden mostrar pus en el espacio entre la garganta y el cuello.
