Síntomas:

Una o ambas amígdalas pueden resultar infectadas. La infección se puede diseminar al techo de la boca (paladar), así como al cuello y al tórax, incluyendo los pulmones. Los tejidos inflamados pueden obstruir las vías respiratorias, lo cual constituye una emergencia médica potencialmente mortal.

Un examen de la garganta y el cuello puede mostrar enrojecimiento e inflamación de una o ambas amígdalas, la garganta, el cuello y el tórax.

Se pueden realizar exámenes para averiguar qué tipo de bacteria está causando la infección. La aspiración del absceso usualmente muestra líquido que contiene pus.
