Ectropión

Definición:

Es la eversión de uno de los párpados, usualmente el inferior, de tal manera que la superficie interna queda expuesta.

Causas, incidencia y factores de riesgo:

El ectropión es generalmente ocasionado por el proceso de envejecimiento y por el debilitamiento del tejido conectivo de los párpados que hacen que éstos se volteen hacia afuera. También puede ser el resultado de la contracción del tejido cicatricial originada por quemaduras o por parálisis facial y se puede presentar como un defecto congénito (por ejemplo, en niños con síndrome de Down ).

El ectropión interfiere con la distribución normal de las lágrimas en la superficie del ojo y puede ocasionar resequedad dolorosa de los ojos, conjuntivitis crónica y queratitis.
