Conjuntivitis - Overview

Inflamación de la conjuntiva; Conjuntivitis aguda

Definición:

Es la hinchazón (inflamación) o infección de la membrana que recubre los párpados (conjuntiva).

Causas, incidencia y factores de riesgo:

La conjuntiva está expuesta a las bacterias y a otros irritantes, y las lágrimas ayudan a protegerla eliminando las bacterias. Además, las lágrimas contienen enzimas y anticuerpos que destruyen las bacterias.

Hay muchas causas para que se presente la conjuntivitis, pero la más común son los virus. Otras causas pueden abarcar:

Alergias (conjuntivitis alérgica)
Bacterias
Ciertas enfermedades
Exposición a químicos
Clamidia
Hongos
Parásitos (rara vez)
Uso de lentes de contacto (especialmente lentes de uso extenso)

La "conjuntivitis aguda" se refiere a una infección viral de la conjuntiva. Estas infecciones son especialmente contagiosas entre los niños.

Los recién nacidos pueden ser infectados por la bacteria en la vía del parto. Esta afección se denomina oftalmia neonatal y se debe tratar de inmediato para preservar la visión del bebé.
