Tratamiento:

El tratamiento de la conjuntivitis depende de la causa.

La conjuntivitis alérgica puede responder al tratamiento de las alergias subyacentes o puede desaparecer por sí sola al eliminar el alergeno causante. Este tipo de conjuntivitis también se puede aliviar con la aplicación de compresas frías.

Los medicamentos con antibióticos, como las gotas oculares, pueden ser efectivos en los casos de conjuntivitis bacteriana. La conjuntivitis viral desaparece por sí sola. La molestia que genera la conjuntivitis viral o bacteriana se puede aliviar con la aplicación de compresas tibias (paño empapado en agua tibia) sobre los ojos cerrados.

Expectativas (pronóstico):

Los resultados suelen ser buenos con el tratamiento.

Complicaciones:

Puede reaparecer la infección dentro de una casa o en la escuela si no se siguen las medidas preventivas.

Situaciones que requieren asistencia médica:

Se debe buscar asistencia médica si los síntomas persisten durante más de 3 ó 4 días.
