Celulitis orbitaria - Información general

Definición:

Es una infección aguda de los tejidos que rodean al ojo, incluyendo los párpados, las cejas y la mejilla.

Causas, incidencia y factores de riesgo:

La celulitis orbitaria es una infección peligrosa con complicaciones potencialmente serias.

Las bacterias de una infección sinusal (Haemophilus influenzae) generalmente causan esta afección en los niños, que hasta los 6-7 años parecen ser particularmente susceptibles a la infección con este tipo de bacterias. Sin embargo, la tasa de celulitis orbitaria grave ha disminuido de forma constante desde la introducción de la vacuna HiB (Haemophilus influenzae B ).

Las bacterias Staphylococcus aureus, el Streptococcus pneumonie y los estreptococos betahemolíticos también pueden causar la celulitis orbitaria.

Otras causas abarcan un orzuelo en el párpado, picaduras de insectos o una lesión reciente en el párpado.

Las infecciones por celulitis orbitaria en los niños pueden empeorar rápidamente y podrían llevar a la ceguera, por lo que se requiere atención médica inmediata.
