Retinoblastoma

Tratamiento:

Las opciones de tratamiento dependen del tamaño y localización del tumor. Los tumores pequeños se pueden tratar por medio de cirugía con láser y, si el tumor se ha diseminado más allá de los ojos, se puede necesitar irradiación y quimioterapia .

Es posible que sea necesario extirpar el ojo si el tumor no responde a otros tratamientos. Así mismo, es importante buscar el tratamiento con un médico experimentado en el manejo de este raro tipo de tumor.

Expectativas (pronóstico):

Casi todos los pacientes se pueden curar si el cáncer no se ha diseminado más allá del ojo; sin embargo, el proceso de curación puede requerir un tratamiento agresivo e incluso la extirpación del ojo para que sea eficaz. Al contrario, si el cáncer se ha diseminado por fuera del ojo, la probabilidad de curación es más baja y depende de la forma como se haya diseminado el tumor.

Complicaciones:

El tumor se puede extender hasta el cerebro y otros órganos.

Situaciones que requieren asistencia médica:

Se debe buscar asistencia médica si se presenta cualquier signo o síntoma de retinoblastoma, en especial si los ojos del niño se ven o aparecen anormales en las fotografías.
