Tratamiento:

El tratamiento recomendado generalmente es la cirugía para extirpar la glándula salival afectada. Si el tumor es benigno, por lo regular no se necesita ningún otro tratamiento.

Se puede necesitar radioterapia o cirugía extensa si el tumor es canceroso. La quimioterapia algunas veces se utiliza en pacientes considerados de alto riesgo o cuando la enfermedad se ha diseminado más allá de las glándulas salivales.

Expectativas (pronóstico):

La mayoría de los tumores de las glándulas salivales no son cancerosos y son de crecimiento lento. La afección por lo general se cura con la extirpación quirúrgica del tumor. En casos excepcionales, el tumor es canceroso y es necesario un tratamiento adicional.

Complicaciones:

  • Los tumores cancerosos pueden causar complicaciones mayores, incluyendo diseminación a otros órganos (metástasis).
  • En contadas ocasiones, la cirugía para extirpar el tumor puede lesionar el nervio que controla el movimiento de la cara.
