Definición:

Es una infección bacteriana dolorosa que implica hinchazón (inflamación) y úlceras en las encías (gingiva).

Causas, incidencia y factores de riesgo:

La boca de trinchera es una forma dolorosa de la inflamación de las encías (gingivitis). El término "boca de trinchera" proviene de la Primera Guerra Mundial, cuando el trastorno era común entre los soldados.

La boca normalmente presenta un equilibrio entre diferentes bacterias. La boca de trinchera se produce cuando hay demasiadas bacterias normales en la boca. Las encías se infectan y desarrollan úlceras dolorosas. Los virus pueden estar comprometidos en permitir esta exagerada proliferación de bacterias.

Los riesgos son, entre otros, los siguientes:

  • Estrés emocional
  • Mala higiene oral
  • Mala nutrición
  • Tabaquismo
  • Infecciones en garganta, dientes o boca

Este trastorno es poco común pero, cuando se presenta, afecta con mayor frecuencia a las personas en edades de 15 a 35 años.
