Colesteatoma

Definición:

Es un tipo de quiste localizado en el oído medio.

Causas, incidencia y factores de riesgo:

El colesteatoma puede ser un defecto congénito (presente al nacer), pero se da más comúnmente como complicación de una infección crónica del oído .

La inflamación prolongada en la trompa de Eustaquio puede provocar una presión negativa en el oído medio; esto empuja a una parte del tímpano (membrana timpánica) en forma equivocada, creando un saco o quiste que se llena con células cutáneas viejas y otros materiales de desecho. El quiste se puede infectar y puede causar el desgaste de algunos huesos del oído.
