Colesteatoma - Overview

Definición:

Es un tipo de quiste cutáneo localizado en el oído medio.

Causas, incidencia y factores de riesgo:

El colesteatoma puede ser un defecto presente al nacer (congénito), pero ocurre más comúnmente como complicación de una infección crónica del oído.

El funcionamiento deficiente de la trompa de Eustaquio lleva a que se presente presión negativa en el oído medio. Esto empuja a una parte del tímpano (membrana timpánica) dentro del oído medio, creando un saco o quiste que se llena con células cutáneas viejas y otros materiales de desecho. El quiste se puede agrandar y romper algunos de los huesos del oído medio u otras estructuras del oído, afectando la audición, el equilibrio y posiblemente el funcionamiento de los músculos faciales.
