Un examen de la boca muestra pequeñas úlceras, similares a las úlceras bucales causadas por otras afecciones. El médico puede sospechar de otros trastornos si hay signos de tos, fiebre o dolores musculares.
Normalmente, no se necesitan exámenes especiales para el diagnóstico de la gingivostomatitis; sin embargo, el médico puede tomar una muestra de tejido de la úlcera para verificar si hay una infección viral o bacteriana, lo cual se denomina cultivo.
