El examen odontológico o médico revela inflamación lingual (o parches de inflamación) y una posible ausencia de nódulos en la superficie lingual (papilas). Si la lesión u otras causas locales no se evidencian con claridad, se le hacen preguntas al paciente para determinar el posible origen de la inflamación lingual. Las causas sistémicas de esta enfermedad se pueden confirmar por medio de exámenes de sangre.
