Signos y exámenes:

La mayoría de las caries son descubiertas en sus fases preliminares durante los controles de rutina. La superficie dental puede estar suave al urgarla con un instrumento puntiagudo. El dolor puede no presentarse hasta las etapas avanzadas de la caries dental. Las radiografías dentales pueden mostrar algunas caries antes de que sean visibles para el ojo.
