Prevención:

La buena higiene oral es la mejor prevención contra la gingivitis porque remueve la placa que ocasiona este trastorno. Los dientes se deben cepillar por lo menos dos veces al día y se deben limpiar suavemente con seda dental, mínimo una vez al día. Las personas propensas a la gingivitis deben cepillarse los dientes y limpiarlos con seda dental después de cada comida y antes de acostarse. Se debe consultar con el odontólogo o con el higienista oral para que brinden las instrucciones sobre las técnicas apropiadas para el cepillado y uso de la seda dental.

El odontólogo puede recomendar instrumentos o herramientas especiales de higiene oral para que las utilicen las personas particularmente propensas al desarrollo de depósitos de placa. Su uso complementa, pero no reemplaza al cepillado minucioso y uso de la seda dental. Los aparatos y herramientas pueden abarcar mondadientes y cepillos de dientes especiales, irrigación con agua u otros dispositivos.

El higienista oral o el odontólogo pueden igualmente recomendar cremas dentales o enjuagues bucales antisarro y antiplaca.

La limpieza o profilaxis dental profesional hecha con cierta regularidad es importante para remover la placa que se puede formar, incluso con un cuidadoso cepillado y uso de seda dental. Muchos odontólogos aconsejan hacerse una limpieza dental profesional por lo menos cada seis meses.
