Definición:

Es la hinchazón (inflamación) del saco lleno de líquido (bursa) en la parte posterior del talón (calcáneo).

Causas, incidencia y factores de riesgo:

Una bursa actúa como amortiguador y lubricante entre los tendones y los músculos que se deslizan sobre el hueso. Hay bursas alrededor de la mayoría de las articulaciones grandes en el cuerpo, incluyendo el tobillo.

La bursa retrocalcánea está localizada en la parte posterior del tobillo en el talón y es donde el gran tendón de Aquiles conecta los músculos de la pantorrilla al talón.

El uso repetitivo o excesivo del tobillo puede hacer que esta bursa resulte irritada e inflamada. Las posibles causas son caminar, correr o saltar en exceso.

Esta afección frecuentemente está asociada con la tendinitis aquílea. Algunas veces, la bursitis retrocalcánea se puede confundir con este tipo de tendinitis.

Aquéllos que se encuentran en riesgo de presentar esta afección abarcan personas que acaban de comenzar regímenes agresivos de ejercicios o que incrementan súbitamente su actividad sin un acondicionamiento adecuado.
