Definición:

Es una inflamación del revestimiento interno de las cámaras y válvulas cardíacas (endocardio).

La endocarditis puede comprometer el músculo, las válvulas o el revestimiento del corazón. La mayoría de las personas que desarrolla una endocarditis ha tenido alguna anomalía de una válvula cardíaca.

Los factores de riesgo para el desarrollo de una endocarditis abarcan:

Uso de drogas por inyección
Colocación de vías de acceso permanente en las venas
Cirugía previa de válvulas
Cirugía dental reciente
Válvulas debilitadas

La infección bacteriana es la fuente más común de endocarditis; sin embargo, también puede ser ocasionada por hongos y, en algunos casos, no se puede identificar ninguna causa.
