Prevención:

La Asociación Estadounidense de Cardiología recomienda los antibióticos preventivos para las personas en riesgo de endocarditis infecciosa antes de:

  • Ciertos procedimientos dentales
  • Cirugías en las vías respiratorias o piel infectada, estructuras cutáneas o tejido musculoesquelético

Es muy probable que se recomienden antibióticos para personas con los siguientes factores de riesgo:

  • Válvulas cardíacas artificiales
  • Ciertos defectos cardíacos congénitos, antes o posiblemente después de la reparación
  • Antecedentes de endocarditis infecciosa
  • Problemas de válvulas después de un trasplante de corazón

Se recomienda el control médico continuado para personas con antecedentes previos de endocarditis infecciosa.

Los consumidores de drogas intravenosas deben buscar tratamiento para la adicción. Si esto no es posible, use una nueva aguja para cada inyección, evite compartir cualquier elemento relacionado con inyecciones y use almohadillas de algodón con alcohol antes de inyectarse para reducir el riesgo.
