Prevención:

Se debe evitar el consumo de alcohol y otras drogas durante el embarazo e informar al médico si se está embarazada (o se cree estarlo) antes de que les receten algún medicamento. Las mujeres con trastorno maníaco-depresivo deben buscar asesoría médica acerca de los riesgos y beneficios de los diversos tratamientos para esta afección durante el embarazo.

Se debe indagar si la madre está vacunada contra la rubéola a principios del embarazo y, si no lo está, debe evitar cualquier posible exposición a esta enfermedad y vacunarse inmediatamente después del parto. La asesoría genética puede ser útil si existen antecedentes familiares de enfermedades genéticas asociadas con una cardiopatía congénita.
