Trombos; Coágulo; Émbolos

Definición:

Son masas que se presentan cuando la sangre se endurece pasando de líquida a sólida.

Un coágulo sanguíneo que se forma dentro de un vaso sanguíneo o dentro del corazón y permanece allí se denomina trombo. Un trombo que se desprende y viaja desde un lugar en el cuerpo a otro se llama émbolo y el término médico conexo se denomina embolia. Por ejemplo, un émbolo que se atasca en los pulmones se denomina embolia pulmonar.

Algunas veces, otros materiales pueden actuar de la misma manera que un émbolo y bloquear el flujo sanguíneo, incluyendo:

Aire
Líquido amniótico
Un trozo de placa ateroesclerótica
Masas de grasa
Pequeños fragmentos de tumor

Los trombos y émbolos pueden fijarse firmemente a un vaso sanguíneo y pueden bloquear parcial o completamente el flujo de sangre a dicho vaso.

Un bloqueo en el vaso sanguíneo impide que el flujo normal de sangre y oxígeno llegue a los tejidos en ese sitio, lo cual se denomina isquemia. Si la isquemia no se trata oportunamente, puede ocasionar daño tisular o necrosis en esa área.
