Síndrome de Crigler-Najjar

Tratamiento:

Es necesario realizarle al paciente fototerapia (tratamiento con luz) continua de por vida. En los bebés, esto se hace utilizando luces de bilirrubina (luces bili o "azules"). Este tratamiento se vuelve menos exitoso después de los 4 años, ya que la piel gruesa bloquea las luz.

El trasplante de hígado se ha utilizado con éxito en algunas personas con enfermedad tipo I.

Expectativas (pronóstico):

Los individuos afectados que alcanzan la edad adulta desarrollan kernícterus (ictericia nuclear), a pesar del tratamiento continuo. La expectativa de vida para quienes tienen la enfermedad tipo I se ha extendido desde la muerte durante la infancia hasta personas que en la actualidad están llegando hasta por lo menos los 30 años de edad.

Complicaciones:

Las posibles complicaciones son:

Kernícterus (ictericia nuclear)
Coloración amarillenta crónica de ojos o piel

Situaciones que requieren asistencia médica:

Se debe buscar asesoría genética si se planea tener hijos y hay antecedentes familiares del síndrome de Crigler-Najjar.

Igualmente, se debe buscar asistencia médica si la madre o el recién nacido presentan ictericia prolongada.
