Hernia de hiato

Definición:

Es una afección en la cual una porción del estómago sobresale dentro del tórax, a través de un orificio que se encuentra ubicado en el diafragma, la capa muscular que separa el tórax del abdomen y que se utiliza en la respiración.

Causas, incidencia y factores de riesgo:

Se desconoce la causa de este tipo de hernias, pero puede ser el resultado del debilitamiento del tejido de soporte. En los adultos, puede existir una serie de factores de riesgo tales como el envejecimiento, la obesidad y el consumo del cigarrillo.

Los niños con esta afección por lo general la presentan al nacer (congénita) y se asocia usualmente con reflujo gastroesofágico en bebés.

Las hernias de hiato son muy comunes, especialmente en personas mayores de 50 años y pueden ocasionar reflujo (regurgitación) del ácido gástrico desde el estómago al esófago.
