SÃndrome de Barrett
Definición:
Es un trastorno en el cual el revestimiento del esófago (el tubo que lleva el alimento desde la garganta hasta el estómago) presenta daño causado por irritación a causa de los ácidos estomacales que se han filtrado hacia el mismo. Dicha filtración de ácido se conoce comúnmente como "acidez" ( reflujo gastroesofágico ).
Causas, incidencia y factores de riesgo:
La causa del sÃndrome de Barrett es una irritación del revestimiento del esófago por el ácido gástrico y suele ser más frecuente en hombres que en mujeres. El factor de riesgo es un reflujo gastroesofágico frecuente y duradero. Asimismo, existe un incremento del riesgo de desarrollar cáncer esofágico con esta afección.
