Es un defecto que está presente al nacer (congénito) que implica ausencia u obstrucción del orificio anal. El ano es la abertura hacia el recto a través de la cual las heces salen del cuerpo.

El problema es causado por el desarrollo anormal del feto. Muchas formas de ano imperforado ocurren con otras anomalías congénitas. Esta anomalía se presenta en más o menos 1 de cada 5,000 bebés.
