A menudo, hay un antecedente familiar del síndrome de Menkes en un pariente del sexo masculino. Entre los signos se pueden mencionar: crecimiento lento dentro del útero, temperatura corporal anormalmente baja, sangrado en el cerebro y apariencia anormal del cabello bajo el microscopio. En los hombres, todos los cabellos serán anormales, pero en las mujeres que portan este rasgo, sólo la mitad de los cabellos pueden ser anormales.
