Las células de Sertoli, las cuales están localizadas en las gónadas masculinas (los testículos), alimentan los espermatozoides; mientras que las células de Leydig secretan una hormona sexual masculina llamada testosterona . En los hombres, algunos cánceres de los testículos pueden comenzar en las células de Sertoli y de Leydig.

El tumor de las células de Sertoli-Leydig es un cáncer que comienza en los ovarios femeninos. Las células cancerosas producen y liberan una hormona sexual masculina, que puede provocar el desarrollo de características físicas masculinas ( virilización ), incluyendo vello facial y voz gruesa.
