Prevención:

La mayoría de los casos no se pueden prevenir.

Se recomienda revisar la tabla de crecimiento con el médico después de cada consulta. Igualmente, se aconseja una evaluación por parte de un especialista, si la tasa de crecimiento del niño está disminuyendo o si la la estatura proyectada del niño como adulto es mucho más baja que la estatura promedio de los padres.

La estatura promedio ajustada de ambos padres es como sigue:

Para los niños:
- estatura de la madre + 5 pulgadas (12.7 cm) + la estatura del padre. Dividir la cantidad total por 2
Para las niñas:
- Estatura del padre menos 5 pulgadas (12.7 cm) + la estatura de la madre. Dividir la cantidad total por 2
