La destrucción de la tiroides en el feto puede ocurrir si la madre recibe un tratamiento con yodo radiactivo para el cáncer de tiroides mientras está embarazada. Los bebés de madres que toman medicamentos antitiroideos deben ser observados cuidadosamente desde el momento del nacimiento para detectar cualquier evidencia de hipotiroidismo transitorio (breve) inducido por medicamentos.
La mayorÃa de los estados en Estados Unidos exigen un examen de rutina en todos los recién nacidos para detectar hipotiroidismo.
