Se cree que la hiperbilirrubinemia familiar transitoria es un trastorno hereditario, autosómico recesivo , que ocurre cuando el cuerpo no descompone o metaboliza apropiadamente una cierta forma de bilirrubina , lo cual hace que los niveles de ésta se acumulen rápidamente en el organismo. Los niveles altos son tóxicos para el cerebro y pueden causar la muerte del individuo.
