Retinopatía diabética - Overview

Definición:

Es un daño a la retina del ojo que ocurre con diabetes prolongada.

La retinopatía diabética es causada por el daño a los vasos sanguíneos de la retina. La retina es la capa de tejido en la parte de atrás del interior del ojo. Ésta transforma la luz y las imágenes que entran al ojo en señales nerviosas que son enviadas al cerebro.


Diabetes - condiciones retinales

Existen dos tipos o etapas de la retinopatía diabética:

  • La retinopatía no proliferativa se presenta primero.
  • La retinopatía proliferativa es la forma más grave y avanzada de la enfermedad.

La retinopatía diabética es la causa principal de ceguera en los estadounidenses en edad productiva. Las personas con diabetes tipo 1 y diabetes tipo 2 están en riesgo de padecer esta afección.

El hecho de tener diabetes más grave durante un período de tiempo más prolongado incrementa las probabilidades de padecer retinopatía. También es más probable que la retinopatía se presente antes y que sea más grave si la diabetes ha estado mal controlada.

Casi toda persona que haya padecido diabetes por más de 30 años mostrará signos de retinopatía diabética.
