El examen físico puede mostrar un hígado agrandado (hepatomegalia), bazo agrandado (esplenomegalia) e inflamación de múltiples ganglios linfáticos en todo el cuerpo (adenopatía generalizada). Puede haber signos de infección ósea (osteomielitis) que algunas veces afecta múltiples huesos.
Una biopsia de tejido puede mostrar granulomas (grupos de fagocitos anormales).
