La causa de la arteritis de Takayasu es desconocida. La enfermedad se da principalmente en niños y mujeres menores de 30 años, especialmente aquellas de origen asiático o africano.
Parece ser una enfermedad autoinmunitaria, en donde las células inmunitarias se dirigen erróneamente contra los tejidos del propio cuerpo, y puede comprometer otros sistemas.
