Tratamiento:
Si hay una infección, se administran antibióticos. Una vez terminados todos los medicamentos, se realizan urocultivos o análisis de orina de control para constatar que la infección haya desaparecido.
Es posible que las mujeres que presenten episodios repetitivos de uretritis o cistitis relacionadas con la actividad sexual necesiten tomar una dosis de antibióticos preventivos antes y después de la relación sexual.
Se puede prescribir fenazopiridina (Pyridium) para disminuir la molestia urinaria.
Se debe suspender el uso de los posibles irritantes químicos.
Expectativas (pronóstico):
En la mayoría de los casos, el médico puede encontrar la causa de la uretritis y tratarla.
La uretritis crónica puede conducir al estrechamiento (estenosis uretral). Se puede requerir cirugía u otro procedimiento médico para corregir el problema.
Complicaciones:
Una infección prolongada y sin tratamiento puede hacer que la uretra se estreche aún más, dificultando el vaciado completo de la vejiga. Igualmente, se pueden presentar infecciones urinarias recurrentes.
Otras complicaciones pueden abarcar:
- Daño al aparato urinario, incluyendo deterioro de la función renal
- Infección renal ( pielonefritis)
