La eritroblastosis fetal se desarrolla en un feto cuando la madre y el bebé tienen grupos sanguíneos diferentes. La madre produce sustancias llamadas anticuerpos que atacan los glóbulos rojos del bebé en desarrollo.

La forma más común de eritroblastosis fetal es la incompatibilidad ABO, que puede variar en su severidad.

La forma menos común se denomina incompatibilidad Rh, que muy a menudo causa una anemia muy grave en el bebé.
