Criptococosis

Tratamiento:

Algunas infecciones no requieren tratamiento. Sin embargo, la vigilancia médica debe continuar durante un año para detectar cualquier progreso de la enfermedad. Si se presentan lesiones pulmonares o la enfermedad se disemina, se prescriben medicamentos antimicóticos y se puede prolongar el tratamiento con dichos medicamentos.

Algunos de los medicamentos indicados son:

• amfotericina B
• flucitosina
• fluconazol

Expectativas (pronóstico):

El compromiso del sistema nervioso central por lo general tiene consecuencias fatales, o produce daños permanentes.

Complicaciones:

• recurrencia de la infección
• meningitis
• daño cerebral o nervioso permanente
• efectos secundarios de los medicamentos, como amfotericina B, que pueden ser severos

Situaciones que requieren asistencia médica:

Se debe buscar asistencia médica si se desarrollan síntomas que sugieren la presencia de criptococosis, en especial si la persona tiene un sistema inmunológico debilitado.
